MIT Strikes Gold!

The California State Department of Education (CDE) has made its decision, and Mare Island Technology Academy, along with its sister school, MIT Academy high school, have been awarded a total of five state-wide awards in three separate categories!

MIT Academy High School:

  • California Gold Ribbon Award
  • Exemplary Career Technical Education Program
  • Title I Academic Achieving School

Mare Island Technology Academy Middle School:

  • California Gold Ribbon Award
  • Title I Academic Achieving School

According to the release from the state superintendent, Gold Ribbon Schools are "schools that are academically successful, vibrant, and innovative centers of learning and teaching. They provide great examples of the things educators are doing right—embracing rigorous academic standards, providing excellence and creativity in teaching, and creating a positive school climate.” The Exemplary Career Technical Education Program Award is awarded to Gold Ribbon high schools that use technology in an innovative and highly connected manner that reflects the CDE's mission to "provide a world-class education for all students and prepare students to live, work, and thrive in a highly connected world." Across the state there were 11 high schools that won both the Gold Ribbon and Exemplary CTE Program award (middle schools were not eligible for the CTE award). Finally, the Title I Academic Achieving School Award was awarded to those Gold Ribbon schools that receive federal Title I funds school-wide, and that assist in meeting the educational needs of students living at or below the poverty line. Across the state, there were only five Title I high schools that won both the Gold Ribbon and Exemplary CTE Program awards.

Congratulations to the staff, students, parents, and supporters of MIT Academy who have made these awards possible, and thanks to all who contributed to this phenomenal accomplishment!
