Parents are expected to participate at MIT. MIT provides:

involvement in governance, decision-making, and operations;

regular contact with teachers and their child’s school advisor;

an extended day program for skill building and enrichment; and

a safe setting with strong adult supports for positive choices

A Charter school is a public school. That means all students are eligible to attend, and there is NO TUITION. Charter Schools receive funding from the same State and local sources as other public schools.

All students must be in attendance from 8:04 to 4:00. If a student is enrolled in the ASP, they must remain on campus until 5:45 pm.

MIT Academy Middle School provides instruction and support allowing all students to successfully meet high performance standards in core academic courses (English, Social Studies, Math, and Science) as well as mastering basic conversational Spanish and a wide variety of technology applications, including web sites. At MIT, this rigorous academic content is taught in its applied context, making the subjects relevant to real life and actively engaging students in learning projects.

Strong core academic program: All students will complete rigorous, interesting courses in each of the core academic areas:

English and Social Studies; taught together as Humanities;
-
Mathematics: accelerated to ensure all students complete Algebra by the end of 8th grade;

Science: taught together with Math in lab and applied projects;
-
World Language - Spanish: Instruction and application focused on producing basic conversational fluency by the end of 8th grade.

Technology: Students use computers in every academic class, with one computer for each two students. Technology skills are also taught in a separate course taken by all students each year.

Community Service: All students have options for supervised, meaningful community service which they may help to design.

Advisory: Every student has an advisor who serves as a trusted adult and personal advocate for all three years.

Tutorial/Study Groups: Every student has access to tutoring, study groups, and/or other types of support to address any deficiencies, ensure success in coursework, and accelerate or enhance learning.
This curriculum will allow MIT to apply for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program when the high school (now in the planning stages) is up through grade 10.

At MIT, high expectations for students include the 3R's of behavior:

Respectful: Students will be respectful to teachers, staff, parents, and each other, as well as their belongings

Responsible: Students will complete assignments, come to school and class on time, and fulfill their commitments.

Reasonable: Students will conformance with the dress code, speak and act appropriately, and resolve disputes in a reasonable manner.

Parents and Families commit to . . .

Eight hours per month (40 hours/year) of service to the school in any of a large number of volunteer opportunities through the week and on weekends;

Participation in the scrip program. Parents commit to participate in the scrip program at the level of $200/month (10 months/year). (Optional)
