MIT Academy Thanks Vallejo!

MIT thanks the Vallejo community for the outpouring of support at the January 20th Martin Luther King "Day of Service" at MIT Academy. Led by Elizabeth Hoffmann of Rebuilding Together Solano County, over 150 volunteers came together to scrape, paint, patch, dig, fill, and repair the MIT multi-purpose room and adjoining landscape, upgrading it to a condition not seen before. It was a genuine community "barn-raising," and the MIT community is deeply grateful for the community's effort.
Mare Island Technology Academy is a public charter school and is among the highest performing secondary schools in Solano County. Established in 1999, MIT Academy has traditionally faced the same facilities challenges as do nearly all charter schools in California -- having to rent, lease, or buy property and facilities to conduct operations. MIT has responded to this challenge by buying a series of decommissioned buildings from Travis and Moffett fields (for $1 each!), which over the intervening years have been steadily upgraded with new ramps, roofs, HVAC, and state-of-the-art technology. But nonetheless they are showing their age and need a lot of TLC, and nowhere was this more evident than our multi-purpose room, which is used by our 800 students several times per day. Hence the efforts of the community and the Rebuilding Together Solano County "brigade" were exactly what our facility needed! The benefits of this effort will be felt by our students immediately, and for many years to come.
