Multicultural Day - 2013

A "Uniform" Approach!

At their March meeting, the MIT Board of Directors approved the Strategic Planning group's annual update, which included a directive to create and implement an official MIT uniform by August, 2013. The uniform, developed by the MIT VOORP committee in consultation with various parent and student groups, was chosen for cost, durability, and consistency with current dress code requirements. Uniform apparel and policies are shown and described on this page. Note also the following:

  • The uniform consists of Dickies brand khaki flat front slacks and white polos (with MIT patch).
  • MIT will allow a one year "grace" period for parents to transition to the new dress code; i.e., current clothing that meets dress code will be accepted until such clothing is used up. Starting in 2014-15, however, everyone will have to be in official uniform. Sixth graders will be expected to be in uniform beginning immediately.
  • MIT's Uniform Coordinator is Debra Fliehmann, who can be reached at extension 155, or at dfliehmann@mitacademy.org. Please direct questions or concerns to her.
  • Uniform items can be purchased anywhere as long as they are in compliance with the guidelines and Dickies brand; Victory Stores (on Virginia Street) will carry all required items. Patches will be available at Victory or from MIT for $1 each.
  • Starting in spring 2014, MIT will be setting up an exchange so parents can pick up uniform pieces at little or no cost. Stay tuned for that.

And two important final points:

  • A "dress code" (which is what MIT has had up until now) does not mandate a particular brand or cut, whereas a uniform does.
  • To address the question of "why uniforms" – as part of MIT's charter, uniforms instill a sense of common identity and collective discipline. That, after all, is what charter schools are all about, and as a charter school leader, MIT embraces that philosophy.

Student Supplies List

Basic supply list for MIT Academy students

Students at MIT Academy receive a Student Planner to assist them in recording and scheduling assignments. If a student loses their planner, replacements are a nominal fee.

This is not intended to be a comprehensive list of items that all students will need. Its purpose is to assist parents and students in their efforts to be ready for school to start, and to purchase desired items during sale times. Please note that individual teachers may have their own list of additional items that will be needed for their class.

Summer Reading Program (for continuing students)

Summer is a wonderful time for your child to relax and enjoy his/her time off.  When your child returns on August 20th, we want him/her to be ready to learn.  One way for them to be ready is to maintain their reading skills.  Therefore, we are offering incentives for your child to read over the summer. Between June 6th and August 20, 2012, your child can earn up to three free dress passes for reading books.

  • Read 1 book -  earn 1 free dress pass
  • Read 3 books - earn 2 free dress passes
  • Read 5 or more books - earn 3 free dress passes

In order to get credit for reading each book, your child will need to select an appropriate book and complete a writing activity.  Your child was shown in their English class how to use a free website to select books that will help them to improve their reading comprehension (www.arbookfind.com).  Your child was also given a list of activities that they can choose from in order to demonstrate that they have read the book.  Please encourage your child to read books over the summer and turn in their assignments during the first week of school.  If you have any questions, please contact me at x108 or ainsaurralde@mitacademy.org.  Thank you!
