GTA Applications FAQ’s

All Griffin Technology Academy schools are now accepting applications for the 2020-21 school year, and here are some answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ’s).

What are My Choices?

  • Mare Island Technology Academy (grades 6-8) – the original! Our award-winning technology-based middle school located at 2 Positive Place, Vallejo, matriculates into MIT Academy High School

  • Griffin Academy Middle School (grades 6-8) – located at 425 Corcoran Avenue, and soon to be entering its third year, Griffin Academy Middle uses the innovative “Summit” personalized learning program, and matriculates into our new Griffin Academy High School.

  • MIT Academy High School – our largest school, recognized five years running by U.S. News & World Report as “One of America’s Best High Schools.” With its focus on college preparation, over 90% of MIT grads are accepted directly into 4-year colleges!

  • Griffin Academy High School (9th-grade only) – this newest entry into the GTA family is an “Early College High School” featuring a combined high-school and college curriculum that leads to both a high school diploma and a 2-year college Associates of Arts degree! (Note that for the 2020-21 school year, Griffin High will accommodate 9th-graders only).

I’m New. How do I Apply? Applications for new students for all GTA schools are now open, and will remain open through February 14th. Applications are available on our website by clicking HERE. As in years past, in the event there are more applicants than openings for any of the four schools, a public lottery will be held on February 21st at 6:00 pm in the MIT cafeteria.

I’m a Continuing Student. Do I Need to do Anything?
New this year, current GTA students do not have to reenroll for next year, but will be automatically assigned to their next grade level at their corresponding school. For transitioning students, MIT 8th-graders will be automatically assigned into MIT 9th grade, and Griffin 8th-graders into Griffin 9th-grade.

I’m currently at school but am interested in transferring to another GTA school. What do I do?
Also new for this year, current GTA students who are interested in transferring to another school can have the opportunity to do so during the transfer window from January 1st – January 31st. Current students can apply to transfer from MIT middle to Griffin middle, or vice-versa. Or current MIT 8th-graders who want to transfer to Griffin High’s Early College program for 2020-21 will also have that option.

I’m currently on a waiting list. Do I have to reapply?
Yes! Also new this year, existing waiting lists will not be rolled over to the next year. Students who are currently on existing waiting lists must reapply as a new applicant and will be either accepted directly or will receive a new waiting list assignment through the public lottery.

Do the “Sibling Rules” Still Apply?
Yes! New applicants with an existing sibling at a GTA school will receive priority enrollment at that school, or at its corresponding middle or high school – Mare Island with MIT, Griffin Academy MS with Griffin Academy HS (siblings do not receive priority for the alternative schools, but if interested in attending are encouraged to apply and will be assigned by the lottery).

What if I Can’t Decide?
New applicants are encouraged to apply for multiple programs by listing their “first” and “second” choices – you really can’t go wrong! In addition, you are encouraged to attend any of our Open Houses in which you can apply on the spot, and/or get all your questions answered.

The Open House dates are:

  • Wed, 12/4/19, 5-7, for all schools, in the MIT cafeteria

  • Th, 1/9/20, 5-7, for all schools, in Griffin Academy Cafeteria

  • Sat, 1/25/20, 2:30-4:30pm, for all schools, in the MITA MPR

  • Tu, 1/28/20, 5-7, for all schools, in the Griffin Academy Cafeteria

  • Th, 2/6/20, 8am – 4pm all-day drop-in for all schools, all locations

  • M, 2/10/20, 5-7 pm, for all schools, Griffin Academy Cafeteria

Additional information can also be found on our website at www.mitacademy.org.

Welcome to Mare Island Technology Academy!

MIT Academy is a 6-12 charter school in Vallejo, California that specializes in technology, innovative instruction, and project-based curriculum. We are the highest performing secondary school in Vallejo due in large part to our outstanding staff, committed parents, and motivated students. We have approximately 800 students and although there are waiting lists at most grade levels, determined parents can nearly always get their students into MIT Academy either through the waiting list (which can last up to a year), or through the annual spring lottery.
